RAMU KAKA — THE UNSUNG POWER CENTRE
Those of you who have watched the Bollywood blockbuster Sholay must certainly remember a character called Ramu Kaka.
Ramu Kaka was the quintessential go-to man of Thakur Sahib.
Need something done?
“Ramu Kaka!”
Need somebody sent somewhere?
“Ramu Kaka!”
Need some information?
“Ramu Kaka!”
Need someone to run an errand?
You guessed it.
Ramu Kaka!
He was faithful, dependable and permanently available. His job description was beautifully simple:
“Whatever Sahib says.”
In Sholay, Ramu Kaka was portrayed in a sympathetic light—a loyal old retainer who served his master faithfully.
But in real life, Ramu Kakas are everywhere.
And they come in many shapes, sizes and degrees of enthusiasm.
⸻
THE ORIGINAL RAMU KAKA
The original Ramu Kaka is a simple creature.
He has a Master.
The Master has power.
And Ramu Kaka has access to the Master.
That is enough.
Suddenly, a man who yesterday was quietly standing in the corner becomes the most important person in the organisation.
He knows everybody.
He knows everything.
And, most importantly, he knows what Sahib wants.
Sometimes even before Sahib knows what Sahib wants!
That is when the transformation begins.
Ramu Kaka starts speaking on behalf of the Master.
Then he starts giving instructions.
Then he starts giving orders.
Eventually, people begin wondering:
“Who is actually the boss here?”
The Master?
Or Ramu Kaka?
⸻
THE POWER OF BORROWED POWER
Ramu Kaka does not possess power of his own.
He possesses something far more interesting:
BORROWED POWER.
It works rather like electricity.
The Master is the generating station.
Ramu Kaka is the wire.
But after carrying the current for a while, the wire begins to think:
“I am the electricity.”
And that is when things become entertaining.
He starts saying:
“I have already spoken to Sahib.”
Translation:
“I haven’t spoken to Sahib, but please don’t challenge me.”
Or:
“Sahib won’t like this.”
Translation:
“I won’t like this.”
Or the most powerful sentence in the Ramu Kaka dictionary:
“Let me talk to Sahib.”
That sentence can silence an entire room.
RAMU KAKA — THE UNOFFICIAL MINISTER
In politics, the species is particularly successful.
Every powerful person has people around him.
Some are advisers.
Some are workers.
Some are genuine friends.
And then there is Ramu Kaka.
He may have no official designation.
But everybody knows him.
He may be called:
Personal Assistant.
Special Representative.
Close Associate.
Old Friend.
Man Friday.
Or simply:
“Woh Sahib ke aadmi hain.”
That last designation is enough.
No visiting card required.
No appointment letter required.
No qualification required.
Just proximity.
RAMU KAKA ENTERS AN OFFICE
The corporate version is equally fascinating.
Imagine an office meeting.
The boss says:
“We’ll think about it.”
Ramu Kaka immediately says:
“Sir has already decided.”
The boss looks surprised.
Everyone else looks frightened.
Ramu Kaka looks satisfied.
The boss says:
“I haven’t decided anything yet.”
Ramu Kaka smiles:
“Yes, Sir, but I knew what you meant.”
Congratulations!
Ramu Kaka has now become the interpreter of the boss’s thoughts.
THE RESIDENTIAL SOCIETY RAMU KAKA
And then we have the most entertaining variety:
THE RESIDENTIAL SOCIETY RAMU KAKA.
Every colony has one.
Sometimes more than one.
He attends every meeting.
He knows every committee member.
He knows who parked where.
Who didn’t attend the meeting.
Who came late.
Who didn’t pay the maintenance.
Who planted a flowerpot.
Who removed a flowerpot.
Who complained about the flowerpot.
And most importantly—
who is close to the President.
He is available for every task.
Nobody has appointed him.
Nobody has given him authority.
But somehow…
he has acquired both.
THE SELF-APPOINTED RAMU KAKA
This is an especially advanced species.
He doesn’t even need a Master.
He simply appoints himself.
Yesterday he was an ordinary resident.
Today he is:
Coordinator.
Tomorrow:
Convenor.
Day after tomorrow:
Chief Coordinator.
And eventually:
SUPREME CUSTODIAN OF EVERYTHING.
Nobody knows when the appointment took place.
There was no election.
No resolution.
No notification.
No oath ceremony.
But Ramu Kaka is already functioning.
This is what I call:
THE SELF-APPOINTED AND HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED RAMU KAKA.
Because eventually somebody asks:
“Who appointed you?”
And suddenly the power supply goes off.
THE WHATSAPP RAMU KAKA — ADMINISTRATOR OF DESTINY
And now we come to the most technologically advanced Ramu Kaka of all.
The WhatsApp Group Ramu Kaka.
He may look like an ordinary person in real life.
But give him Administrator Rights, and something extraordinary happens.
His personality undergoes an immediate transformation.
Yesterday he was:
“Good morning, everyone.”
Today:
“As per the decision of the Admin Team…”
And you immediately realise that you are dealing with serious power.
The WhatsApp Ramu Kaka usually insists that he is not acting personally.
Oh no!
He is merely acting:
“On behalf of the group of Master Administrators.”
Who these Master Administrators are remains a closely guarded secret.
They may have met somewhere.
They may have had a telephone conversation.
They may have exchanged a WhatsApp message.
Or perhaps—
they exist only in the imagination of Ramu Kaka.
But the authority is very real.
THE TWO SUPERPOWERS
The WhatsApp Ramu Kaka possesses two terrifying buttons:
DELETE MESSAGE
and
REMOVE FROM GROUP
These are not ordinary buttons.
They are the nuclear weapons of the WhatsApp world.
You post a song.
Ramu Kaka doesn’t like it.
DELETE MESSAGE.
You post another song.
Still doesn’t like it.
DELETE MESSAGE.
You politely ask why your post was deleted.
That can be dangerous.
Because now you have questioned the authority of the Administrator Establishment.
And then comes the ultimate punishment:
REMOVE PARTICIPANT
You are gone.
No appeal.
No hearing.
No charge sheet.
No court martial.
You simply disappear from the group.
One minute you are there.
The next minute WhatsApp politely informs you:
“You were removed from the group.”
And Ramu Kaka goes back to his tea.
THE ADMINISTRATOR’S FAVOURITE SENTENCE
If you dare to question the deletion, Ramu Kaka has a ready-made response:
“I am only acting on behalf of the Admin Team.”
Ah!
The mysterious Admin Team.
Like the Supreme Court, the Cabinet and the United Nations combined.
Nobody knows exactly who decided what.
Nobody knows when the decision was taken.
Nobody knows whether there was even a decision.
But Ramu Kaka knows.
And that is enough.
WHEN RAMU KAKA BECOMES THE CONSTITUTION
The real danger begins when Ramu Kaka starts confusing:
Group Rules
with
Ramu Kaka’s Rules.
The group may say:
“Please avoid political arguments.”
Ramu Kaka interprets:
“I decide what constitutes an argument.”
The group may say:
“No inappropriate content.”
Ramu Kaka interprets:
“I decide what is appropriate.”
And eventually:
“Anything I don’t like is inappropriate.”
At that point, the WhatsApp group has quietly transitioned from a community into a:
RAMU KAKA REPUBLIC.
WHY DOES RAMU KAKA WORK SO HARD?
This is the great mystery.
He works without salary.
He attends meetings nobody wants to attend.
He makes telephone calls nobody asked him to make.
He argues with people who have done him no harm.
He takes responsibility for things that don’t belong to him.
He runs around organising events.
He sends messages.
He gives instructions.
He settles disputes.
He creates a few new disputes.
And then goes home exhausted.
But happy.
Because somewhere in his mind there is a small voice saying:
“I AM IMPORTANT.”
And that, my friends, is sometimes the real remuneration.
THE MASTER LOVES RAMU KAKA
The Master, meanwhile, is delighted.
Why wouldn’t he be?
Here is a man who:
- works for free,
- takes calls,
- gives instructions,
- faces criticism,
- attends meetings,
- handles unpleasant people,
- and occasionally gets shouted at.
- Praises the Master.
all on the Master’s behalf.
The Master sits comfortably.
Ramu Kaka runs around.
It is a beautiful arrangement.
Until something goes wrong.
THE DAY OF THE BIG MISTAKE
Suppose Ramu Kaka takes a decision.
Nobody likes it.
People protest.
Questions are asked.
The matter reaches the Master.
The Master looks innocent.
“Who said that?”
Silence.
Then everyone points towards Ramu Kaka.
The Master looks at him.
Ramu Kaka looks at the Master.
The Master says:
“I never asked him to do that.”
And there it is.
The oldest survival technique in the world.
RAMU KAKA BECOMES EXPENDABLE.
The man who yesterday was:
“Our trusted man.”
Today becomes:
“I don’t know who gave him this authority.”
And Ramu Kaka suddenly discovers a fundamental truth of power:
Borrowed power comes with borrowed protection.
WHY RAMU KAKA MAKES MORE ENEMIES
The Master may have ten enemies.
Ramu Kaka will have fifty.
Why?
Because the Master doesn’t personally tell everyone NO.
Ramu Kaka does it for him.
The Master doesn’t personally reject proposals.
Ramu Kaka does it.
The Master doesn’t personally reprimand people.
Ramu Kaka does it.
The Master doesn’t personally exercise authority.
Ramu Kaka does it with interest.
Sometimes he even adds a little extra authority.
Just for effect.
And therefore people who may have no problem with the Master develop a very serious problem with Ramu Kaka.
THE RAMU KAKA FORMULA
It is actually quite simple:
Master’s Power + Ramu Kaka’s Enthusiasm + Ramu Kaka’s Interpretation = Trouble
And sometimes:
Master’s Power × Ramu Kaka’s Ego = Disaster
THE ULTIMATE IRONY
But here is the funny part.
Ramu Kaka often imagines that he is indispensable.
He believes the organisation cannot function without him.
He believes the colony needs him.
He believes the WhatsApp group needs him.
He believes the Master needs him.
And perhaps, occasionally, the Master actually does.
But there is one fundamental rule of Ramu Kaka economics:
The Master can replace Ramu Kaka.
Ramu Kaka cannot replace the Master.
That distinction is occasionally forgotten.
And that is when the comedy begins.
THE DAY RAMU KAKA LOSES HIS POWER
Imagine one morning the Master changes.
Or the committee changes.
Or the WhatsApp group changes its administrators.
Suddenly:
No access.
No special instructions.
No telephone calls.
No “I will speak to Sahib.”
And worst of all…
NO ADMIN RIGHTS.
Ramu Kaka opens WhatsApp.
Looks at the group.
He is still there.
But now he is simply:
“Ramu.”
Not:
“Ramu Kaka.
A moment of silence.
Perhaps a tear.
Perhaps a cup of tea.
And finally the realisation:
“Power was never mine.”
LONG LIVE RAMU KAKAS!
Yet, despite everything, we must acknowledge one important fact.
The world cannot function without some Ramu Kakas.
Every organisation has people who quietly get things done.
Every leader needs dependable people.
Every community needs volunteers.
Every WhatsApp group needs administrators.
The problem begins only when the volunteer becomes the authority, the messenger becomes the message, and the borrowed power becomes personal power.
So let us salute the Ramu Kakas of the world.
The faithful.
The tireless.
The permanently available.
The self-appointed.
The over-enthusiastic.
The unofficial spokespersons.
The emergency coordinators.
The people who know what Sahib thinks—even when Sahib hasn’t thought about it.
And above all, the brave souls who stand in the line of fire whenever something goes wrong.
Because when the bullets of controversy start flying…
the Master may duck.
But Ramu Kaka is already standing in front.
After all—
THE MASTER HAS POWER.
RAMU KAKA HAS THE MASTER’S POWER.
And sometimes, unfortunately…
RAMU KAKA THINKS HE IS THE MASTER.
😂
So, dear readers, the next time you encounter one, don’t argue with Ramu Kaka.
Don’t challenge Ramu Kaka.
Don’t ask who appointed Ramu Kaka.
And if you are in a WhatsApp group—
for heaven’s sake, don’t ask him why he deleted your post.
Because he may have the ultimate answer:
“I am only acting on behalf of the Admin Team.”
And before you can type your reply…
YOU HAVE LEFT THE GROUP.
Or perhaps more accurately—
YOU HAVE BEEN LEFT OUT OF THE GROUP. 😂
Long live Ramu Kakas of the world!
Guchi.
