The Thief Who Found the Light Within
In a quiet village, a boy grew up under unusual circumstances. His father had passed away when he was young, leaving his mother to raise him alone. She, driven by desperation and bitterness, taught him an unconventional lesson: the art of stealing. She would whisper, “Never listen to scriptures or visit holy places; they will weaken your resolve.”
As the boy grew older, he became an accomplished thief, feared in the village but never caught. On his way to nearby towns for his nightly thefts, he would always avoid religious places, particularly the Gurdwara that lay along the main road. He obeyed his mother’s advice diligently, even covering his ears with his hands to block the sacred hymns sung there.
The Turning Point
One fateful evening, the thief was on his way to a wealthy merchant’s house. As usual, he covered his ears while passing the Gurdwara. Inside, a congregation was singing Gurbani, its soulful melody resonating through the air. But he remained deaf to it, his hands pressed firmly against his ears.
God, however, had other plans. As the thief walked, his foot hit a small stone. He stumbled and fell to the ground. In that moment, his hands instinctively came off his ears, and the divine words of Gurbani reached him:
“You steal into houses and hide from the world,
But how can you hide it from the Master,
As He watches you all the time.”
The words pierced his heart like an arrow. For the first time, he felt the weight of his actions. The thief realized that while he had been successful in hiding his crimes from others, he could never hide them from God. The light within him—the voice of his soul—had been warning him all along, but he had ignored it.
A Life Transformed
That night, he returned home without stealing. He confessed his life of crime to his mother and shared how the divine words had awakened something deep within him. Initially, his mother resisted, but the thief’s transformation was genuine and unwavering. He sought forgiveness from those he had wronged, started working honestly, and became a respected member of the community.
The Lesson for All
This story teaches us a timeless truth: no one can hide anything from God. His light, a part of His decentralized energy, resides within all of us, constantly guiding and scrutinizing our actions. When we indulge in unethical deeds, our inner light warns us. Ignoring it leads to a clouded soul, much like a soot-covered lamp that no longer shines. However, scriptures and spiritual teachings act as a cleansing agent, helping us restore our inner clarity.
The thief’s journey reminds us that it’s never too late to reform. By listening to our inner voice, the voice of God within, we can lead a purposeful life based on integrity and hard work. As the Bollywood couplet beautifully puts it:
“तोरा मन दर्पण कहलाए,
भले बुरे दोनों कर्मों को देखे और दिखाए।”
Let us introspect and nurture the divine light within us, for it is the ultimate guide to a meaningful and ethical life.
