The Winter Miracle of the Four Fishes

In one of the suburbs of New Jersey, nestled within the embrace of a family home of my daughter, resides a humble pound, home to four small, colorful fishes. As autumn faded into winter, the family watched with trepidation as the landscape transformed into a frozen wonderland, fearing for the safety of their aquatic companions.

From mid-November to the first week of May, the bitter chill of winter gripped the region in its icy hold, burying the world beneath layers of snow. Yet, despite the harsh conditions, the family’s worries for their finned friends persisted.

One chilly morning, as frost clung to the windowpanes, the family gathered around the pond, anxious to check on their beloved fishes. With bated breath, they cautiously opened the lid, half-expecting to find their delicate pets frozen in the icy depths.

To their astonishment and delight, the fishes swam about energetically, their vibrant colors shimmering beneath the crystal-clear water. Relief flooded through the family as they marveled at the resilience of their aquatic companions.

Puzzled by the fishes’ survival, the family pondered over what they could have eaten to sustain themselves during the harsh winter months. They were reminded of the teachings from Sikh Scriptures, which spoke of God’s providence extending to even the most fragile of creatures.

Reflecting on nature’s wonders, the family recalled the extraordinary migration of Siberian cranes, whose young were left behind in harsh climates only to be reunited unharmed in the spring. Such miracles reaffirmed their faith in the benevolence of a higher power.

“ਊਡੇ ਊਡੇ ਆਵੈ ਸੈ ਕੋਸਾ ਤਿਸ ਪਾਛੈ ਬਚਰੇ ਛਿਰਆ ॥

ਤਿਨ ਕਵਣੁ ਖਲਾਵੈ ਕਵਣੁ ਚਗੁਾਵੈ ਮਨ ਮਿਹ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਿਰਆ ॥” (SGGS, Ang/Page 10)

As they watched the fishes dart gracefully through the water, the family found solace in the belief that just as God cared for the smallest creatures, so too would He provide for their own needs.

With gratitude in their hearts, they embraced the winter miracle of the four fishes, a testament to the enduring power of faith and the boundless grace of the divine.
