“Finding Joy in the Simple Things: A Meditation Practice”

Dear friends, let us seek happiness today and begin living with it once we find it.

A sage was once asked, ‘What is your meditation practice?’ He replied, ‘My meditation practice entails wearing clothes with such joy as if there is no greater pleasure in the world, bathing with the same joy, and experiencing profound gratitude towards the world each night as I sleep. Even sleep itself brings me immense joy.’

In the small things of life, those who cannot find joy will struggle to find it in the grander aspects of the world. There are no great joys in the world; rather, it’s the accumulation of small joys that brings about true happiness. Everything, from wearing clothes to eating a good meal and strolling on the road, from gazing at the moon to witnessing a flower blossom, is significant. I believe that for a practitioner of meditation to truly find fulfillment, they must begin by finding joy in these small things.

You will be surprised to find that an aura of peace surrounds you, the world is shaped by thoughts of friendship, and through the habit of enjoying self-action and embracing the idea that the action itself is joy, not the outcome, joy will naturally arise. You will discover that your once burdensome tasks have become sources of joy. It’s a matter of perspective—tasks become burdens when viewed as such, but with a shift in perception, they become joyful experiences.

Guchi.
