Embracing Tradition: A Makar Sankranti Morning Remembered.

Couple of years back on a chilly morning of 14 Jan the day of Makar Sankranti, as the alarm rang at 5:30 AM, I felt an overwhelming laziness tempting me to return to the warmth of my quilt. Glancing out the window, heavy fog and the chilly embrace of the morning greeted me. Despite the comfort within, my wife had already embarked on her morning routine, preparing for her prayer session after the bath. Our daily ritual included a morning walk, but that day, the weather seemed to conspire against it.

Contemplating skipping the walk due to the harsh conditions, a sudden realization struck—it was the 14th of January, the auspicious day of Makar Sankranti. Memories flooded in from 61 years ago, transporting me back to my childhood village. On that sacred day, my late mother would wake me up, emphasizing the significance of shunning laziness, taking an early bath, and offering prayers at the Gurudwara. As a reward God would grant us prosperity and endow me with good education and professional success.

Recalling her words, “Get a move on, be a good boy” I was inspired. Despite the unfavorable weather, the memory of my mother’s advice propelled me forward. I convinced my wife, sharing the importance of the day and the cherished memories of my youth. Together, we embarked on our morning walk, seeking blessings for a prosperous year from the echoes of my late mother’s wisdom and the divine.

In the journey of life, the lessons passed down by my mother continued to guide me—no room for laziness, only the pursuit of progress. As we navigate the foggy morning, I was reminded that sometimes, the key to success lay in moving forward, regardless of the circumstances. The advice echoed in my heart as I embraced the teachings of my late mother and passed them down to my own children—shun laziness, keep moving, and success will be yours.

Guchi.
