Fukrey (ਫੁਕਰੇ, फ़ुकरे) is a Punjabi/Hindi slang word which implies persons who are boastful, show off type, talking big but good for nothing.
I have already written a post on the subject so I shall call this episode as Fukrey 2.
In the city, there lived a character named Raju, known far and wide for his flamboyant attire and tall tales. He was the quintessential ‘Fukra,’ always boasting about his connections and capabilities. One day, Raju’s friend Sameer found himself in a predicament – he needed to retrieve a borrowed sum from a rather tough debtor.
Turning to Raju, Sameer said, “I’m in a fix, Raju. This guy owes me money, and he’s not returning it.”
Raju, puffing up his chest, responded confidently, “Don’t you worry, my friend. I’ve got connections in high places. I know the mayor and the chief of police. I’ll have them send their best men to sort this out for you.”
Impressed, Sameer asked, “You really know the mayor and the chief of police?”
Raju grinned, “Oh, absolutely! My uncle’s cousin’s friend is a close associate of the mayor’s personal secretary.”
Sameer was skeptical but decided to trust Raju’s claims. “Well, if you say so.”
The next day, Raju came to Sameer, “All sorted! I had a word with my connections, and they’ve taken care of everything. Your money will be back soon.”
Relieved, Sameer thanked Raju profusely. As he left, Raju couldn’t resist patting himself on the back for his masterful performance. However, just like in any good story, there was a twist. A week later, Sameer noticed that the debtor had vanished, and there was no sign of his money.
Growing suspicious, Sameer tried calling Raju, only to find that his number was disconnected. It became clear that Raju’s claims were nothing but empty words. He had once again fallen victim to a ‘Fukra.’
But that wasn’t the end of Raju’s deceit. As Sameer looked back, he realized that Raju had often used the pretext of helping him to enjoy lavish dinners and drinks. Whenever Sameer mentioned his troubles, Raju was quick to suggest they discuss it over a meal at a fancy restaurant or drinks at an upscale bar. Sameer remembered how he had picked up the tab each time, thinking Raju was offering genuine assistance.
The story of Raju serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us all to be wary of those who talk big but deliver little. Boasting and bragging might make for entertaining conversations, but when it comes to relying on someone, it’s essential to distinguish between genuine help and empty promises. Just like in the famous Bollywood movie ‘Fukrey,’ the world is full of characters who might seem impressive on the surface but crumble when put to the test. So, remember, not everything that glitters is gold, and not every ‘Fukra’ is worth your trust.
Stay wise and avoid the ‘Fukreys’ in your life!
Guchi.
