Concept of Hindustan (India) over the Centuries!

India is a diverse country with a rich history and culture. The concept of Hindustan, or India, has evolved over thousands of years and encompasses a vast array of religious, cultural, and linguistic traditions. Despite the many challenges and conflicts that India has faced over the centuries, its people have managed to maintain a spirit of brotherhood, peace, and tolerance that is deeply ingrained in the fabric of the society.

One of the key factors that has contributed to this sense of unity and harmony in India is the belief in the fundamental equality of all human beings and respect for the nature (Vanaspati). This idea is deeply rooted in Indian philosophy and spirituality, and is reflected in the many religious and philosophical traditions that have emerged in the country over the centuries. From Hinduism and Buddhism to Jainism, Sikhism, and Islam, India has been home to a wide range of spiritual traditions that have all emphasized the importance of compassion, love, and respect for all living beings.

Another important factor that has contributed to India’s tradition of brotherhood and tolerance is the country’s long history of cultural exchange and assimilation. Over the centuries, India has been invaded and occupied by various foreign powers, including the Mughals, the British, and others. However, rather than being overwhelmed by these outside influences, the Indian people have managed to incorporate them into their own cultural identity, creating a rich and diverse tapestry of traditions that is uniquely Indian. Unlike many countries of the world where the local/original populace almost vanished in the event of foreign influx, in India these elements got amalgamated into the Indian civilisation.

Despite the many challenges and struggles that India has faced over the centuries, the country has remained steadfast in its commitment to promoting peace, brotherhood, and tolerance. Today, as India strives on the path of development and growth the issues of poverty eradication, inequality, social injustice which are gradually being addressed, still remain; it becomes more important than ever that we work together to uphold the Indian civilisation ethos and build a society that is truly inclusive and just for all.

I shall conclude with a couplet from the poetry of famous Indian Poet Sir Allama Iqbal as it aptly sums up the existence and sustenance of Indian civilisations over the centuries.

“Kuchh baat hai ki hastii mitati nahin hamari,
Sadiyon rahaa hai dushman daur-e-jahaan hamara.”

कुछ बात है कि हस्ती मिटती नहीं हमारी
सदियों रहा है दुश्मन दौरे जहाँ हमारा

“There is something about us that our existence does not perish like clay”

For centuries, an era of our enemies has persisted.”

Guchi.
