Baba Buddha Ji. Excerpts from the Sikh History!

A spiritual man Baba Buddha Ji has a special significance in Sikh history. He witnessed the rise of the Sikhism from the first Guru Nanak Dev Ji to the sixth Guru Hargobind Ji. Baba Buddha was born in October, 1506 AD in village Kathu Nangal near Amritsar. Later his family settled in the village Ramdas. When he was 12-13 years old, Guru Nanak Dev ji came to his village while preaching Sikh religion. The boy Baba Buddha was very much impressed by his stunning face. He would often take some food items from home and feed him. Once he asked that just as the body is satisfied by eating food, what is the way to satisfy the mind? What is the method of freedom from death so that the movement of the Soul does not happen again and again?Guru Nanak Dev looked at him in surprise and said that your age is tender and fit to eat and play; But you are talking like an old man. After this Guru ji gave some sermon to solve his doubts. Since then that child accepted Nanakdev ji as his Guru. He did service to Gurus and following their instructions as the aim of his life. Since then he was called as ‘Baba Buddha’.(Old wise man). Seeing the dedication and loyalty of Baba Buddha, when Guru Nanak Dev ji selected Guru Angad Dev as his successor, Baba Buddha took the responsibility of declaring him as Guru by applying tilak on his forehead. This tradition continued till the sixth Guru Hargobind ji. Not only this, when Guru Arjan Dev Ji established Sri Guru Granth Sahib at Sri Harimandir Sahib, Amritsar on September 1, 1604, the glory of the first granthi was also conferred on Baba Budha ji. Even after attaining such an important position, he remained the epitome of service, humility and modesty. He never considered anything small like cutting grass, carrying soil or filling water. When Guru Hargobind ji was arrested and imprisoned in the Gwalior Fort by the Mughal ruler Jahangir, Baba Budha started a new tradition to maintain the morale of the Sikh Sangat. Under his leadership, the Sikhs used to sing the Guru Bani in groups, circumambulate the Harimandir and then go back home after performing Ardas. This circumambulation was done at night. When Guru Hargobind ji came out of prison, he liked it very much, since then this tradition is going on in Harimandir Sahib. When Guru Arjun Dev Ji did not get a child for a long time, he asked his wife Mata Gangadevi to seek blessings from Baba Buddha. She made a variety of delicious dishes and went to Baba ji on a ride with her servants. Baba Budha said that I am the slave of the Gurus. Guruji himself has the ability to give blessings. The mother returned empty handed in despair. When Guru Arjun Dev Ji came to know about this, he explained to his wife. The next time the Guru wife went barefoot with roti, onion and lassi (butter milk). Baba Budha was joyful and blessed her, due to which a brilliant child like Hargobind was born in their house. Since then, on the birthday of Baba Budha, only langar of missi roti, onion and lassi is distributed in the Gurdwara built at his birth village Kathu Nangal. Baba Buddha Ji breathed his last at the ripe old age of 124 years.
