We often see many places in our dreams, sometime places where we have never been. At times we also dream of seeing places which are not otherwise in the realm of our reach due to various constraints. Examples are like faraway countries we cannot get visa or afford to travel due to limited finances, as also natural objects like inaccessible mountains, planetary bodies, universe etc. Though in our dreams we can sometimes visualise these. Virtual reality had made all this impossible/difficult reach into a real possibility. We have gadgets where we can feel and perceive our presence in desired place without actuality travelling and sitting in the comfort of our drawing room.
We have heard of Virtual Reality episodes in our ancient history in some form or the other. Like in the Indian ancient history, the battle of Mahabharat was described/ visualised by one sage Sanjay to Dhritrashtera the blind king of Kaurvas. Similarly many Indian saints were able to influence their pupil/ subject to visualise/ see their presence on many planets by mere spiritual meditation. Such saints were able to reach and visit their far off relatives while in trance/ meditation. Thus the concept of virtual reality is not new, only difference is that it has been now achieved by scientific exploration, innovations and made available to a common person. The development of communication and data technology has made it possible. Starting with Radio, Telephony, Television and Optical photography the Virtual Reality has come up a long way, though it is still in the nascent stage and there is a long way to achieve the advancement.
Today there are plenty of VR ( Virtual Reality ) gadgets which give the audience a limited feel of ‘Being There‘, but I was very impressed with a gadget called “Oculus Quest 2” which can literally make you feel “Being There”. Taking advantage of 360 degree photography this gadget can take you to the desired places virtually, like climbing Mount Everest, flying in the Cockpit of Airbus 380 and even on a spaceship using this instrument sitting in the comfort of your home. Just wear it and search for the 360 video of the place that you wish to be and with bit of adjustments you visualise being there. What an amazing feeling. This gadget is also good for 3 Dimensional games where you can visualise playing against your opponent in the Virtual world. Though there are many pros of such gadgets but cons also exist and primary one being getting addicted to playing games or watching videos through the headset for prolonged periods which may be bad for your eyes and neck muscles. However with a bit of viewing discipline one can gain immensely using VR devices. Besides being a source of entertainment VR is also very educative and has many other benefits. Virtual meetings can be held between the persons sitting in different countries, with obvious benefits of cost cutting. VR can also assist the medical professions to treat their patients. The advantages specially during the era of pandemic like COVID to the Corporate world while operating in “ Work from Home “ mode have been tremendous. In all VR is going to be a big boon to the humanity. VR has indeed translated your Dream World into Reality!
