Humility is a great virtue of life. Guru Nanak while describing its value has given a very good example of a tree which is tall, mighty, straight but serves no purpose comparing it to a person having false pride and arrogance in a verse in Asa di var (Sri Guru Granth Sahib, Page 470) which reads as under.
English translation runs like this.
” The Simal tree is huge and straight,
The birds who visit it in the hope of food are highly disappointed, as its fruit is without taste,
Its flowers have no fragrance and its leaves are of no use,
O, Nanak, humility and sweetness are the virtue and goodness.”
